What are generic Top-level Domains?

The most recognizable gTLDs include .com (originally for commercial entities), .org (for organizations), .net (for network services), .edu (for educational institutions), and .gov (for government agencies). While these extensions were initially designed with specific purposes in mind, most gTLDs have become largely unrestricted, meaning anyone can register them regardless of their intended use.

Evolution and expansion of gTLDs

The domain landscape changed dramatically in 2011 when ICANN approved the New Generic Top-Level Domain Program, which allowed organizations, individuals, and governments to apply for new top-level namespaces. This expansion resulted in nearly 2,000 applications, introducing extensions like .bike, .clothing, .guru, .holdings, .plumbing, .singles, and .ventures.

As of 2025, approximately 1,200 delegated generic top-level domains exist in the global Domain Name System. This massive expansion has given businesses and individuals far more options to create domain names that reflect their brand identity, industry focus, or creative vision. For instance, a technology startup might choose .tech, while an online retailer could opt for .shop or .store.

Who manages gTLDs?

gTLDs are governed by ICANN, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, a nonprofit organization that oversees the global domain name system. All gTLDs must comply with international regulations set by ICANN, and they can only be registered through officially accredited registrars or resellers.

Unlike country-specific domains, gTLDs have no geographic restrictions. Anyone from anywhere in the world can register a gTLD domain on a first-come, first-served basis, making them ideal for businesses seeking a global presence.

What are country code Top-Level Domains?

Country code Top-Level Domains, or ccTLDs, are two-letter domain extensions specifically designated for particular countries, sovereign states, or autonomous territories. These extensions are based on the ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 country codes, an international standard for country identification.

Examples include .in for India, .uk for the United Kingdom, .fr for France, .de for Germany, .jp for Japan, and .au for Australia. The first ccTLDs were registered in 1985, with .us (United States), .uk (United Kingdom), and .il (Israel) being among the earliest. India’s .in domain was introduced in May 1989.

How ccTLDs are managed

Unlike gTLDs, ccTLDs are managed by designated organizations within each country and are subject to local laws and regulations rather than international oversight. In India, the .in domain is managed by the National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI), which was delegated this responsibility by the Government of India.

ccTLD registries have the freedom to establish their own registration policies, pricing structures, and eligibility requirements. Some ccTLDs are open to anyone globally, while others impose restrictions requiring registrants to have a physical presence, citizenship, or other connection to the country.

Internationalized Domain Names in India

India has made significant strides in making the internet accessible to its diverse linguistic population. NIXI offers Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs) in 15 scripts serving all 22 scheduled Indian languages, including Arabic (.ุจฺพุงุฑุช), Bengali (.เฆญเฆพเฆฐเฆค), Gujarati (.เชญเชพเชฐเชค), Hindi (.เคญเคพเคฐเคค), Kannada (.เฒญเฒพเฒฐเฒค), Malayalam (.เดญเดพเดฐเดคเด‚), Punjabi (.เจญเจพเจฐเจค), Tamil (.เฎ‡เฎจเฏเฎคเฎฟเฎฏเฎพ), and Telugu (.เฐญเฐพเฐฐเฐคเฑ).

This makes NIXI the only registry in the world offering the highest number of IDN domains in multiple languages. These native-script domains help create a sense of belonging for non-English speakers and promote digital inclusion across India’s demographic diversity. The .in domain has grown significantly, with registrations surpassing 4 million, placing it among the top 10 ccTLDs worldwide.

Key differences between gTLDs and ccTLDs

Geographic scope and target audience

The most fundamental difference lies in geographic association. gTLDs are globally recognized and not tied to any specific location, making them suitable for businesses targeting international audiences. ccTLDs, on the other hand, signal a clear connection to a specific country or region, which can build trust and credibility with local customers.

While gTLDs must comply with international regulations, ccTLDs are subject to requirements determined by each country’s domain name regulation authority. This means that policies governing registration, renewal, transfer, and dispute resolution can vary significantly between different ccTLDs, whereas gTLDs follow standardized ICANN policies.

gTLDs typically have minimal restrictions and are available to anyone globally. ccTLDs may have specific eligibility criteria. Search engines treat these domain types differently. ccTLDs naturally perform better in local search results because they signal to search engines that the website caters to a specific geographic area. When users search from a particular country, search engines often prioritize websites with that country’s ccTLD.

gTLDs, being location-neutral, are treated as globally relevant. This makes them advantageous for businesses targeting multiple countries or seeking international visibility without geographic limitations.

Choosing between gTLDs and ccTLDs

The choice between a gTLD and ccTLD depends on your specific goals and target audience. If you’re running a local business in India serving primarily Indian customers, a .in domain can establish trust and improve your visibility in local search results. The familiar extension signals that you understand and cater to the local market.

For businesses with global ambitions or those operating across multiple countries, a gTLD like .com or .org provides universal recognition and avoids tying your brand to a single geographic location. Many international companies register both types-using a gTLD as their primary domain while securing ccTLDs for specific markets.
