What exactly is an Internet Service Provider?
An ISP is a company that offers internet connectivity services to subscribers in exchange for a fee. These organizations maintain the network infrastructure required to connect individual users and businesses to the internet backbone. In India, there were 1,076 ISPs offering broadband and narrowband services as of June 2023, serving over 895 million internet users.

Internet services were first launched in India on August 15, 1995, by Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited. ISPs in India are categorized based on their coverage area. Category A licenses permit nationwide operations, allowing providers to offer services across the entire country. Dial-up connections typically offer speeds between 2,400 bps and 56 Kbps, making them the slowest option available. The connection prevents simultaneous phone calls and internet use, as both services share the same line. While largely obsolete in urban areas, dial-up remains accessible in remote regions where broadband infrastructure hasn’t reached.
DSL and ADSL
Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) technology transmits data over existing copper telephone wires without interfering with voice service. ADSL, the most common DSL variant in India, offers asymmetric speeds with faster downloads (1.5 to 9 Mbps) than uploads (16 to 640 Kbps). The “always on” nature of DSL means you don’t need to dial in each time you want internet access. However, connection quality degrades with distance from the provider’s central office, limiting availability in rural areas.
Cable internet
Cable internet uses the same coaxial cable infrastructure that delivers television programming. Cable modems can achieve downstream speeds up to 1.5 Mbps, though actual performance varies because bandwidth is shared among users in a local area. When multiple neighbors use their connections simultaneously, speeds can drop significantly. Cable internet doesn’t require a phone line, making it an attractive option for households that rely primarily on mobile phones.
Fiber optic connections
Fiber optic technology represents the current gold standard for internet connectivity. These connections use thin glass or plastic strands to transmit data as pulses of light, achieving significantly higher speeds than traditional copper-based systems. Major providers like JioFiber and ACT Fibernet have expanded fiber networks across Indian cities, offering gigabit speeds that support bandwidth-intensive activities like 4K streaming, cloud computing, and large file transfers.
T1 and leased lines
T1 lines are dedicated phone connections supporting data rates of 1.544 Mbps, consisting of 24 individual 64 Kbps channels that can carry voice or data traffic. These leased lines provide symmetric bandwidth, meaning upload and download speeds are identical. Businesses favor T1 connections because they offer guaranteed bandwidth with service level agreements (SLAs) that specify uptime commitments. In India, leased lines are available at speeds ranging from 64 Kbps to 622 Mbps, with connections delivered through optical fiber cables, telephone lines, or wireless links.
T3 lines, the more powerful version, combine 672 channels to deliver approximately 44 Mbps of bandwidth. Large corporations, universities, and data centers typically use T3 connections to handle massive data volumes and ensure uninterrupted connectivity for thousands of simultaneous users.
Satellite internet
Satellite internet serves areas where terrestrial infrastructure is impractical or unavailable. The connection relies on communication satellites orbiting Earth to relay data between ground stations and user terminals. While satellite connections can reach remote locations, they suffer from higher latency due to the physical distance signals must travel and may experience weather-related disruptions.
Local versus nationwide ISPs
The Indian ISP market includes both local providers serving specific cities or regions and national operators with pan-India presence. Local ISPs often provide personalized customer service and competitive pricing within their coverage areas. They may specialize in serving residential neighborhoods or business districts with tailored packages.
Nationwide ISPs like Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea operate across multiple states, leveraging extensive infrastructure to offer consistent service quality. These larger providers typically have greater resources for network expansion, technology upgrades, and customer support operations. As of June 2023, the top five ISPs in India served the majority of the country’s 861 million broadband subscribers.
Choosing the right ISP for your needs
Selecting an appropriate ISP requires evaluating several factors beyond advertised speeds. Consider the actual bandwidth requirements for your household or business, factoring in the number of devices that will connect simultaneously and the types of online activities you perform regularly. Video conferencing, online gaming, and cloud backups demand higher speeds and lower latency than basic web browsing or email.
Service reliability matters significantly. Check if the ISP offers uptime guarantees through service level agreements, particularly for business connections. Read recent customer reviews to assess the provider’s track record for handling outages and technical issues. Response time for technical support can dramatically affect your experience when problems arise.
Examine the total cost structure, including installation fees, equipment rentals, and any data caps or fair usage policies. Some ISPs impose limits after which they throttle speeds or charge overage fees. Contract terms vary widely, with some providers offering flexible month-to-month plans while others require annual commitments with penalties for early termination.
The infrastructure behind ISP operations
ISPs maintain complex network infrastructure to deliver internet services. They establish connections to higher-tier network providers or internet exchange points where different networks interconnect. Tier 1 ISPs operate backbone networks that connect globally without paying for transit, while Tier 2 and Tier 3 providers purchase connectivity from upstream providers to reach the broader internet.
Network operations centers monitor traffic patterns, manage bandwidth allocation, and respond to service disruptions. ISPs deploy routers, switches, and other equipment throughout their coverage areas to direct data packets efficiently. They must continuously upgrade infrastructure to accommodate growing subscriber bases and increasing bandwidth demands driven by high-definition video streaming and cloud services.
